What to do after a slip and fall accident

On Behalf of | Nov 5, 2020 | Injuries |

A slip and fall injury can happen at a business, private home, store, sidewalk, school, public street and more locations. These accidents can leave victims with lasting, devastating injuries.

If you or a loved one unfortunately sustained injuries in a slip and fall accident and want to build your legal case, you need to take some immediate steps.

Seek care for your injuries

The first step you should take is prioritizing your health. See a doctor so he or she can diagnose your injuries, treat your condition and document them in your medical records.

Document all information

Journal information such as how you fell, the way you fell, the date and time of the incident and what you were doing right before the accident. To potentially use later as evidence, store any clothing or shoes you had on at the time. Write down the names, contact information and addresses of all potential witnesses of the incident.

It is extremely helpful to snap multiple photos of the scene. Capture any conditions that contributed to your accident such as ice patches, wet floors or staircases.

Report the accident

Speak to a landlord, property owner or manager of the location where you sustained your injury. Make sure to get a written account of the accident and have the person you speak to also keep a copy.

Do not give statements

Avoid giving a statement to your insurance company until speaking with your attorney. Do not take any blame for the slip and fall and at this point, do not place any blame either. Keep your overall communication with any manager or owner professional and short. Steer clear of posting details about your fall on social media.
